Aam Aadmi Party ropes in Dalit Assaulter only to expel him after massive furore
Bathinda, 25 December: A murderous attack survivor, an eyewitness in the case and the man convicted of the crime — all from Mansa’s Jhabbar village — joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) here today. It was only later in the day that AAP, in a damage-control move, expelled the convict.
Bant Singh Jhabbar, a former CPI(ML) leader who lost his arms and a leg in a deadly assault by Navdeep Singh, had launched a struggle against caste bias and oppression in 2006, making him an icon of Dalit resurgence.
Surprisingly, Both Bant Singh and his assaulter, Navdeep Singh, a local Congress leader and Jat Mahasabha general secretary, as well as eyewitness Surjit Singh, now a panchayat member, joined Aam Aadmi Party here in Mansa. The event took place in presence of AAP Leader Sanjay Singh.
However, an embarrassed Aam Aadmi Party later expelled Navdeep Singh and his aide who had brutally attacked Punjabi Dalit activist and singer Bant Singh Jhabbar, following widespread uproar over the duo joining the fledging party.
