The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered ban on liquor shops on national and state highways across the country.
The ban will be effective from April next year. The license of existing shops will not be renewed.
The apex court said that all existing licences of liquor shops on highways will not be renewed after March 31, 2017.
It further ordered that such shops must be at least 500 metres away from state and national highways and that liquor banners and ads must be removed.
The apex court was hearing the petitions challenging the verdict of various High Courts which held that liquor shops must be located at a distance from state highways so that they are neither visible nor accessible to the commuters.
The orders have to be implemented by the Chief Secretary and police chiefs of respective states.
