A 55 Year old Muslim man in Agra was allegedly assaulted this morning by two men of his own community for reading Hindu scripture Bhagavad gita. According to police, the incident occurred around 9 am when the victim, Dilsher, was reading the religious book at his house after returning from his duty.
According to police, Dilsher who by profession is a security guard in a factory, has alleged that Sameer and Zakir, accompanied by some unidentified men trashed him and took away the copies of Hindu scriptures – Ramcharitmanas and Gita.
Talking to TOI, Dilsher said that he has been reading these books for the past 38 years. He said, “I’m a Muslim but my religion doesn’t restrict me from reading holy books of other communities.”
A case has been registered against the suspects, Sameer and Zakir, and some unidentified persons under IPC’s sections 298 (uttering, words, etc., with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation at the Delhi Gate police station.
Talking to TOI, superintendent of police (city) Abhishek said that the matter is being investigated and action will be taken against them.
