Amit Panghal won gold in the 49kg category after beating reigning Olympic champion and world championships silver-medallist Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta on Saturday.
“I had lost to him (Hasanboy Dusmatov) before, so I had to take revenge. Coach Santiago (Nieva) and other coaches had prepared me well. In the semifinal, I did not play the first round well, here I did not repeat that mistake”, said Amit Panghal on winning gold.
This was India’s first gold in boxing at these Asian Games and also their first-ever in this category across all Asian Games. India has only won nine golds in boxing since the sport was first introduced at the Asian Games in 1954. This was also only India’s second medal at the Games in the men’s light-flyweight category.
His win made for emotional scenes during the medal ceremony, with Amit being unable to hold his tears back as the flags went up while the Indian national anthem was being played.
Champ in tears.. His tears tells us the story.. Beating the No.1 olympian.. Watta fight that by Amit Panghal.. Proud moment in Indian Boxing !! Nd our flag shall fly high 🇮🇳❤
