With just months to go for Loksabha elections, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) received a huge boost, when major Christian clerics of the state came forward to declare their support for the party. Speaking at a Christmas gathering on 23rd of December, pastors, bishops and priests from all across Tamil Nadu came out in support of DMK.
DMK President MK Stalin was present at the event, when the announcement came. Celebrating Christmas, Stalin who otherwise claims to be an atheist, cut a cake and fed it to the bishops. The chemistry between the Christian clerics and Stalin were such that many felt, the event looked more of a party conference than a religious celebration.
Earlier, addressing the gathering, Stalin hit out at the BJP, accusing it of confusing people. Stalin said that his party would always stand by the minorities and marginalized. He recalled how former CM, late M. Karunanidhi stood by the Dalits, poor and minorities.
“Helping minorities does not mean it is against the majority. It is our duty to extend helping hand to them. But the BJP is confusing the people,” he said.
He also accused the BJP of flavoring the poor, and listed out the welfare schemes that were brought in during DMK government in the state. “It is DMK that is keeping the BJP at bay in Tamil Nadu. We have to ensure the same nationwide,” he said.
