Christian Michel’s father was a friend to Indira Gandhi and her family: claims CBI report

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has made several staggering revelations about AugustaWestland middleman Christian Michel’s family relations with the Gandhis in its remand report which was submitted to the Court. CBI in the report has claimed that Christian Michel’s father had very personal relations with the Late Prime Minster, Indira Gandhi and her family.

Reportedly, CBI in the report has said that Christian’s father, Wolfgang Michel was a consultant of Westland helicopters who was in connection with the Indian Government. The CBI documents claim that during interrogation, Christian confessed that his father told him that he used to meet the Gandhis. “His father knew late Indra Gandhi since 1970s and was very close to Gandhi family,” read the document.

The CBI document further referred to an incident when questions regarding the identify of Mr. Wolfgang Michel were raised inside the parliament. The then PM Indira Gandhi is said to have replied that she “considered him as a friend of India”, as per the CBI’s remand papers.

Christian Michel’s father, Wolfgang Michel was a consultant of Westland helicopters, the same company which after a corporate merger became AugustaWestland. Christian himself had been a Westland Helicopters consultant and retained the position even after merger. The CBI document added that during questioning, Michel revealed that his father had participated in defence deals and had known Gandhis personally.

After months of legal hassle, CBI was finally able to get Michel’s custody after a Dubai court allowed his extradition to India earlier in December. Michel had been wanted in India over allegations that he paid kickbacks to Indian officials in order to sway the deal for the procurement of 12 VVIP choppers in favour of AgustaWestland. The choppers were to be used to ferry the President, Prime Minister and other important dignitaries.
