Congress leader Pankhuri Pathak gets trolled on Twitter for trying to drag BJP into the “Rape supporter aunty” story

In a video going viral on social media, a middle aged woman allegedly addressed seven men at a restaurant in Gurugram to rape girls who according to her were wearing ‘inappropriate clothes.’ The girls later hounded the woman to a nearby shopping mall, demanding apology and recorded the second encounter. Shivani Gupta, one of the girls who was at the receiving end of the woman’s comments, put up a facebook post detailing the incident.

Shivani alleged, ‘She addressed seven men at the restaurant to rape us because she felt we deserved it for wearing short clothes and bashing her unsolicited opinion.’ The video, which spread like wildfire on social media, had 11k shares on Facebook and over 32K views on Instagram, but was later removed from Instagram because it flouted community guidelines.

The woman rightly attracted criticism from all corners for her comments, as wishing for the rape of someone can’t be accepted in a civilised society. People on social media are addressing her as “rape supporter aunty.” However, now it seems like some people are trying to give a political twist to this entire incident.

In a tweet, Congress leader Pankhuri Pathak alleged that the husband of the woman is a BJP supporter. “Rape Supporter Aunty’s husband is a Modi supporter , follows various sanghi FB pages , shares posts by hate mongers & fake news pedlars like Anshul Saxena & has a Reliance Connection. Understandable what gave ‘Rape Supporter Aunty’ the guts to do what she did,” she wrote.

“Understandable what gave ‘Rape Supporter Aunty’ the guts to do what she did,” she further said. One can wonder whether Pankhuri wanted to imply that all the supporters of India’s ruling political party are rape supporters or apologists. Here one may also remember that the leader of Pankhuri’s former party, Mulayam Singh Yadav had said “Ladke hai, galti ho jaati hai (they are boys, they make mistakes)” while speaking about a rape incident. And one of her companions in Congress, Priyanka Chaturvedi recently left the party over allegations of misbehaviour from male members.

Pankhuri was confronted by Twitterati who visibly did not like the attempts to politicise the entire situation. “@pankhuripathak I don’t understand if a Dawood Ibrahim is a Lata Mangeshkar fan, keeps praising her, do we blame and malign Lata ji for it? Is Lata ji responsible for it? What idiotic, nonsensical points are these people bringing up every day? I think they have sensed 23rd May,” wrote one user.

Other users also condemned the politicisation attempts.

Meanwhile it remains to be seen if any legal actions are taken by either the woman or the girls against each other.
