Congress stakes claim to form government in Goa, just within hours from Manohar Parrikar’s demise

Within hours from the the demise of Goa’s incumbent Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Congress party sent out a letter to the governor Mridula Sinha, staking claim to form the government.

Congress in its letter claimed that the alliance partners of the BJP in Goa had allied with it only on the condition of Manohar Parrikar being the CM, but since has passed away, the party has no allies. “The coalition partners of the Parrikar led government had allied BJP on condition that the government is headed by Mr. Manohar Parrikar the then Defence Minister of India. The BJP therefore has no allies as of now,” the Congress letter claims.

The letter urges the State governor to ensure smooth transfer of power. “This unfortunate development (Parrikar’s demise) calls for the immediate action on your part for smooth transition and transfer of power,” the letter says.

Congress is the single largest party in 40 membered Goa assembly, however Manohar Parrikar has been heading an alliance government led by second largest party BJP and with help from other parties such as MGP and GFP.

Goa Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Manohar Parrikar died on Sunday evening after a prolonged battle against cancer at the age of 63.
A four-time Chief Minister of Goa who was known for his simplicity and had good relations across the political spectrum, Parrikar breathed his last at his residence here. It was in October that the state government made a formal announcement about him suffering from a pancreatic ailment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “India will be eternally grateful to Shri Manohar Parrikar for his tenure as our Defence Minister. When he was RM, India witnessed a series of decisions that enhanced India’s security capacities, boosted indigenous defence production and bettered the lives of ex-servicemen.”

“Shri Manohar Parrikar was the builder of modern Goa. Thanks to his affable personality and accessible nature, he remained the preferred leader of the state for years. His pro-people policies ensured Goa scales remarkable heights of progress,” Modi said on Twitter.
