CPI member involved in EV Ramasamy statue desecration?

In a recent incident in Tamil Nadu two men had vandalized the statue of EV Ramasamy, the pioneer of the Dravidian movement in South India. R. Muthuraman (42) of Anna Nagar in Tirupattur, and his nephew, Francis alias Silambarasan (28) of Maruthuvar Nagar in Tirupattur have been arrested for vandalizing the statue of Periyar near the Tirupattur Taluk office. The duo have been booked under IPC 294 A, 153 A and 506 (2).

While Muthuraman was Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Tirupattur town secretary, Francis was affiliated to the Communist Party of India (CPI), police said. Eyewitnesses had confirmed that Francis climbed up the pedestal and damaged the statue using a hammer, while Muthuraman was standing by his two-wheeler. The spectacles and nose of the statue, and the plaque was damaged.

Several media houses and twitter handles were squarely blaming members of BJP alone for vandalizing the statue of EV Ramasamy, there was no mention of Francis.

EV Ramasamy, who had sown the seeds of hatred among-st south Indians by peddling his infamous and defunct Aryan-Dravidian theory enjoys a mammoth following in Tamil Nadu, even today.

Twitter user Ethirajan Srinivasan (@Ethirajans) had suggested that this unholy alliance was not pointed out by any of the Mainstream Media houses in India. A CPI member in Vellore, said Francis was enrolled as a “candidate member” of the party. “He was expelled from the party two years ago due to certain activities that were against the party and the ideology”.

Yet another twitter user Ex-Comrade (@excomradekerala), had gone ahead to allege that CPI National leader D Raja’s wife, Annie Raja, had admitted that one of the culprits was a former CPI member.  Although this tweet has been re-tweeted 821 times, SatyaVijayi was not able to personally verify this piece of information.

While the investigation against these individuals is still pending with the Tamil Nadu police, CPI’s plan to instigate people against BJP cannot be ruled out. In an open and shut case as this, people were quick to denote and blame the BJP for the act.

All Media houses were quick to blame Mutthuraman of BJP, while the man who went along his relative Francis of CPI was completed ignored, except for reports from ‘The Hindu’ and other regional portals.
