Dalit Christian boy allegedly murdered for marrying Kerala Catholic girl

In a suspected incident of honour killing, Kevin P Joseph, a resident of Kottayam district in Kerala was found dead here at Kollam on Monday morning. Kevin was allegedly under abduction by the family of his newly wed wife’s family before being found dead.

Kevin’s body was found lying face down at Chaliyakkara stream near Thenmala in Kollam district. It is being suspected that culprits murdered Kevin somewhere else and then dumped him near the stream. Several foot-marks have also been noticed along the banks.

On Sunday, Kevin’s newly wed wife Neenu had approached to Kottayam police station seeking action against the gang which she alleged had abducted her husband. Sub-inspector of Gandhinagar police station in Kottayam, MS Shibu, has been suspended for not taking any actions in regards to the case. Neenu has alleged that police didn’t take any prompt action to save her husband citing lack of personnel due to the visit of CM Pinarayi Vijayan.

Kevin and Neenu met while pursuing a course at Kottayam collage. The two got married against the will of the girl’s family. Reportedly Neenu’s family was against their relation because the boy is from Dalit roots and they are Roman Catholics. Neenu’s family later registered a complaint with the police stating that she had gone missing. Though the police summoned the two, Kevin and his friend Anish left the girl back at her hostel as she confirmed that she intended to go with Kevin.

After that a gang allegedly led by Neenu’s family members arrived at Kottayam, where they vandalized Kevin’s house and took him away along with Anish. When police tried to contact the gang over phone, they were given false information that Kevin has jumped out of the car at midway. The police was searching for Kevin until the news of his death came this morning.

While Anish who probably had a better fortune than his friend was thrown out of the car at midway after being brutally trashed. He has sustained severe injuries on his face and is currently hospitalised at medical collage Hospital.

Meanwhile political tensions in regards to the incident are also escalating. Congress workers led by opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala staged protests outside of the Gandhinagar police station. BJP leader MT Ramesh blamed the LDF government for the incident and went a step further to allege that the abductors were CPI(M) members. The BJP leader sought a judicial probe into the murder.
