Day after girl alleged rape by BJP MLA, her father dies in custody

A day after a 17-year-old girl, who accused Bangarmau BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her, tried to immolate herself near the residence of UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over police inaction. Her father died in custody in an Unnao jail Monday, allegedly of injuries sustained when he was brutally assaulted by supporters of the MLA six days ago.
Four supporters of the MLAs – Vineet, Bauwa, Shailu and Sonu – were arrested in connection with the case on Monday.

A video clip of the victim’s father, which went viral on social media Monday, had led police to suspend the Station House Officer and five policemen of Makhi police station.

The minor has alleged that the MLA and his brother were intimidating the family to withdraw the case. She said her father was badly thrashed by the MLA’s supporters while he was on his way to a local court. Though both sides lodged complaints against each other, the police chose to arrest her father, who was then sent to judicial custody.
Late on Sunday, the woman’s father was rushed to the district hospital after he complained of vomiting and abdominal pain. He died in the early hours of Monday. A panel of three doctors will conduct a post mortem.

On Sunday, the girl, along with her family members, threatened to commit suicide outside the Chief Minister’s House in Lucknow, alleging that the police refused to take action against the MLA despite numerous complaints and applications.

Kuldeep Singh said the allegations were being leveled against him to defame him as part of a “conspiracy” by those who could not tolerate his popularity and methods of operation.
