Days after sacred threads of at least 10 people were forcibly cut, four persons, attached to the Dravida Viduthalai Kazhagam, who confessed that they had snatched the sacred thread, and pulled the tuft, of an elderly man in Triplicane on Wednesday morning, surrendered before the Assistant Commissioner Royapettah later in the afternoon. The four were identified as Ravanan, Bhoopathy, Parthiban and Rajesh.
This has not been the first instance where members of Dravida Viduthalai Kazhagam have created hooliganism. There has been several instances in the past where members of this fringe party have attacked elderly citizens in the name of EV Ramasamy’s ideals.
As they forcibly stopped the men and tore off their sacred threads, the accused allegedly shouted slogans hailing EV Ramasamy, witnesses have told the police.
A senior officer said the incident took place around 7.30 am within the limits of Ice House police station in Triplicane. “We suspect that eight people targeted people walking on Nallathambi street. They targeted those who were bare chested and returning from a nearby temple. Only one of them agreed to file a complaint; the others were afraid to give an official statement.”
Police claim that none of the other passersby tried to rescue the elderly person. “He (a Kannada Brahmin) was so shaken by the incident that he refused to lodge a complaint,” said a senior police officer.
They have been booked under section 147 (punishment for rioting), 153 A (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 295 A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 506 (1) punishment for criminal intimidation.
