Father Kuriakose, one of the main witnesses in nun rape case found dead in mysterious circumstances

One of the most outspoken voices against rape accused cleric Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who had also given a statement to the police against him, 67 year old Father Kuriakose Kattuthara, was found dead this morning. The exact reasons of death are yet to be known, however the father’s family is sensing a conspiracy behind the sudden death.

Father Kuriakose had given a statement to police against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who is accused of raping a nun from missionaries of Jesus. Father Kuriakose’s brother, Jose Kattuthara, told Mathrubhumi news that he is suspicious about his brother’s death, and alleged that he has been killed for giving a statement against Bishop Franco Mulakkal.

Earlier, Father Kuriakose had alleged that he was under immense pressure from the church and officials for supporting the nun who has accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal of rape. “The sisters had approached me complaining about Bishop Franco. They did not approach the Kerala police fearing the bishop. In fact, I fear what will happen to me for speaking out against him.”

Father Peter of the Jalandhar Diocese said that this morning few nuns knocked at the door of Father Kuriakose, but when he didn’t answer, they returned with another pastor from the Parish. Upon opening the door forcefully, the nuns and the pastor found Father Kuriakose lying on the ground. They rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.

The alleged rape victim nun and many of those who are protesting in her favor have been former students of Father Kuriakose.

On October 15th, Bishop Franco Mulakkal recieved bail from Kerala High court in the nun rape case. At the time of granting bail, Kerala high court dictated the Bishop to surrender his passport and barred him from entering Kerala. He received a hero’s welcome when he returned to Jalandhar on October 17, with supporters showering him with rose petals and garlanding him.
