The name of Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer is remembered by Indians as one of the most dreaded villains in history. It was him who ordered the massacre of unarmed Indian protesters in Jallianwala Bagh of Amritsar on 13th of April 1919. Now, a hundred years later, the notorious moniker of “General Dyer,” has been bestowed upon an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer by the people of India
We are indeed talking of IPS Lipi Singh, the Superintendent of Munger police who ordered open fire on Durga immersion procession in Munger, killing one and injuring many. Since past couple of days, Singh has emerged as one of the most despised individuals on social media. People are constantly comparing her actions with that of General Dyer, but who she really is? What is her past work record? Here is all that you need to know about IPS Lipi Singh:
1 – Daughter of Neta
Lipi Singh is daughter of JNU leader Ramchandra Prasad Singh, who is a member of the Rajya Sabha. He was a UP cadre IAS officer before joining politics. He was also principal secretary to Nitish Kumar. Lipi claims to be first female police officer from Bihar’s Barh district.
2 – Lady Singham
The fall of Lipi Singh has been no short of dramatic. Once hailed as ‘Lady Singham,’ Singh is now being called General Dyer. She first shot to fame in 2019, she took tough action against Mokama MLA Anant Singh alias Chhote Sarkar Singh, booking him under relevant sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, who is on the run ever since, as per a TOI report published earlier.
3 – Political backing
In the run up to 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Singh was removed from the position of Barh district’s SDPO by Election Commission on the request of Anant’s wife Neelam Devi, who was contesting the poll from Munger Lok Sabha as a Congress candidate. However, right after the election, Singh got her position in Barh back. Back then, it was alleged that Lipi got her second posting as Barh SDPO because of his father’s proximity with CM Nitish Kumar.
4 – Accused of witch-hunt
During her second stint, she went all out against all associates of Anant Singh, with many even accusing her of a witch-hunt. Lipi, since her appointment has put over 700 behind the bar. Responding to allegations of politically motivated witch-hunt, she had told TOI, “I have nothing to do with the political affiliation of any person. I take action on the basis of evidence and nothing else. And Anant is no exception.”
