Veteran Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir is set to contest in the next general elections from Delhi on a ticket from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to reports. BJP is eager to have Gambhir on board for the elections, as per a report in national daily – Dainik Jagaran.
Gambhir joins a long list of Indian cricketers who have previously left the sport in favour of politics, representation and legislation duties. Kirti Azad, Mohammad Azharuddin, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mohammad Kaif, Praveen Kumar, Vinod Kambli and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi are the Indian cricket stars to have previously done the same.
Someone like Gambhir fits the bill for BJP and brings in a huge fan base with him to the party. For the BJP, which hasn’t been in power in the state for a while now, it will be a perfect boost to have the local superstar in their ranks.
Meanwhile, Gambhir’s international career is completely off the track at the moment. His last appearance for India came against England in Rajkot, the first one of the five-Test series in the year 2016. Gambhir had got the call after KL Rahul suffered an injury in the first Test of the home season against New Zealand.
