Hindus in West Bengal’s Hooghly attacked for opposing to lockdown violation by “certain community”

According to reports, Hindu houses and establishments in Telinipara and Chandannagar areas of West Bengal’s Hooghly district were attacked by a mob allegedly belonging to Muslim community on Sunday evening.

Reportedly, the attack came after local Hindus opposed the violation of the lockdown norms by Muslims in the area. Taking to Twitter, West Bengal BJP President Dilip Ghosh alleged that when authorities were trying to take Muslims to quarantine centres, they directed their anger on hapless Hindus. “Things have taken a communal turn and homes, business establishments and temples belonging to Hindus are being attacked and damaged,” Ghosh said.

He further said that the law and order in the state has collapsed. Meanwhile BJP MP from Hooghly, Locket Chatterjee also made similar claims about Muslims turning violent after police tried to impose restrictions and take them to quarantine. She further alleged that instead of taking action against the culprits, police is arresting local Hindus and BJP workers.

She further stated that she has written to the Union Home Ministry with details of the incident and requested the Centre’s intervention.

Hitting out at the state’s Mamata Banerjee led government, a tweet from West Bengal BJP’s official handle read, “vote bank patronised by TMC has held the state to ransom.”

It may be noted that just days ago, policemen were attacked in Howrah’s Tikiapara while they were trying to maintain lockdown in a minority dominated area.
