Journalist Arrested at midnight by Congress-JDS Government for speaking about Tipu Sultan

Santosh Thimmayya, a young journalist with newspaper Hosa Dighanta was arrested earlier today for criticizing Tipu Sultan in a speech. Santosh had delivered a speech at Karnataka’s Gonikoppa, in which he extensively criticized Tipu Sultan for the atrocities he carried out on his Hindu subjects. Santosh has also been an ex-writer here at SatyaVijayi.

Santosh had spoken about how some communities still remember the sufferings they endured during Tipu Sultan’s reign. He mentioned about the Mandayam Iyengar Brahmins who don’t celebrate Diwali/Naraka Chaturdasi to remember their sufferings during the reign of the Sultan.

Reportedly, some local Muslims held a press conference to condemn Santosh’s speech and called for protests against him. After this the Karnataka police registered a suo moto FIR against the journalist, and called him on 11th November, asking to collect a copy of it.

However, because Santosh was out of town, he told the police that he would collect the copy as soon as he returns. The police then proceeded to arrest him and took the journalist under their custody on 13th November, midnight.

The police action met with strong reactions on social media. Various people have criticized the move as an attempt to curb people’s freedom of speech.

It is being speculated that whether HD Kumaraswamy Government is trying to please the larger alliance partner Congress party, who have been flag bearers of Tipu Sultan in the state for past several years.
