A truck hit Bangalore-Nanded express coach at a level crossing at Madakasira in Penukonda mandal in Anantapur district. The collision occurred somewhere around 2.30 am while the train was on its way to Nanded.
The collision happened when the driver of the truck, that was transporting granite, lost control over the truck as his brakes failed. The truck hit the train and four coaches of the train derailed. The driver as well as the cleaner of the truck died. The collision also resulted in the death of atleast four people who were in the train including an MLA, Venkatesh Naik from Devadurg, Karnataka. Atleast 20 people were also injured in the incident.
Train movement in the region has been affected.
“One lorry filled with stones broke closed gate and dashed into the train. Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu is monitoring the development,” said Railways Spokesperson Anil Saxena.
The injured in the incident have been shifted to a government-run hospital at Penukonda.
Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas and another minister from the district Palle Raghunath Reddy called on the injured and directed the officials to provide best possible treatment to them.
The accident has affected the movement of trains on the Bengaluru-Guntakal route. Railway officials, with the help of local authorities, were engaged in removing the derailed coaches to clear the track.
