Kejriwal hails Bhagwant Mann’s resolution of quitting liquor as “sacrifice for people”

During a rally on Sunday, Aam Aadmi Party MP from Punjab’s Sangrur, Bhagwant Mann announced that upon the request of his mother, he has taken a resolution of not touching liquor from 1st of January, 2019. Later in the same event, Aam Aadmi Party’s supremo, Arvind Kejriwal applauded Mann, and hailed his resolution as a “great sacrifice” for the people.

“Friends, Bhagwant Mann has won my heart. Not only mine, but he also won the hearts of whole Punjab. A leader should be like him who is ready to make any kind of sacrifice for the people. It is not a small thing to make such a big commitment. After 1 January, he says he will not touch liquor. It is a very big thing, said Kejriwal.

“Today Punjab is sinking because of drugs. In the last Punjab elections, Mann fought against Sukhbir Singh Badal from Jalalabad seat because he felt at that time Sukhbir was the biggest guilty for the situation Punjab was in. Today, Sukhbir Badal is responsible for drugs in Punjab,” alleged Kejriwal.

Mann, who was a stand-up comedian prior to joining politics, has been notorious for his habit of excessive drinking, though he himself has always denied the allegations. Even several parliamentarians had accused Mann of attending the parliament sessions after consuming liquor.

Kejriwal must have expected appreciation from the peoples, while lauding what he called “sacrifice” of his fellow activist. But the reactions on twitter and other social media media platforms were quite the opposite.

Kejriwal’s deputy Manish Sisodia too tweeted his encouragement: “At Barnala rally, Bhagwant Mann’s announcement – on January 1, he has resolved not to touch alcohol ever. From the stage, he made the promise before his mother and the people of Punjab that he would apply his tan, man, dhan (body, soul and mind) in the service of Punjab.”
