With general elections closing in, all the political parties have started playing their cards. Some parties are fielding names popular in their respective constituencies. Others are showing faith in big national level names to attract the voters. Some parties have opted to stay back with the tried and tested formula of caste and community based equations to achieve electoral success.
But amid all this, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress seem to have coined an whole new formula this elections. The new formula of Mamata Banerjee led party is fielding actresses from the Bengali industry to attract the masses.
The Trinamool Congress on Monday released their list of candidates for the Loksabha elections. And while 41% of the total tickets went to women, four of them were from the Bengali industry. Apart from known names in political circles like Moon moon sen and Shatapdi Roy who have been associated with the party from sometime now, there are two new names.
The new faces to have joined the ranks are popular Bengali actresses Nusrat Jahan and Mimi Chakraborty. Nusrat Jahan will be contesting from Basirhat, which is widely expected to be a tough seat. Mimi Chakraborty will be trying her electoral luck from Jadavpur, where the Left retains a significant votebank.
Incumbent MP from Jadavpur, Sugata Bose hasn’t got permission from Harvard university to contest Lok Sabha polls this time around. Idris Ali who was MP from Basirhat has been given ticket in assembly bypoll by TMC.
Like several tollywood cinestars, Mimi has been regular in big-ticket TMC events like Martyrs’ Day remembrance on 21st July. She has also been seen in other cultural events which have active patronage of the state government. But till Mamata announced her name, she was never actively part of TMC. So in a way, politics will be a fresh start for this young actress.
However, Mimi said that she is up for the challenge and is ready to embrace this new responsibility. According to Mimi, if elected she will try her best to strike a balance between her acting career and job as a legislator. Actress however acknowledged that the news came as a shock to her and she only got to know about her candidature when Mamata Banerjee announced it in the press conference.
Nusrat Jahan on the other hand is one of the most popular face in today’s Bengali entertainment industry. Originally hailing from Kolkata, she has done movies with big banners and top stars in her relatively short acting career.
Nusrat like Mimi, is a regular in all major cultural and political events hosted by either the state government or TMC. However, not many people would have known about her getting a ticket in the Lok Sabha polls, though Nusrat herself had given a cryptic hint few days back.
