Mamata Government Goes Against Centre Over Directive on Sardar Patel’s Birth Anniversary

The West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has got into a fresh confrontation with the Centre over directive on observing Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s birth anniversary. The Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal administration asked institutes of higher learning under it to ignore the directives of the Central government for celebrating Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s birthday.

The Union government has asked all the states to observe ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’ on October 31 to commemorate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has written to the Chief Ministers and others for organising events to administer a pledge, run for unity and march past on the occasion.

The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (HRD) also directed all institutes of higher education in the country to conduct a “unity run” on October 31. The ministry also asked institutes to send recordings of the programme to the University Grants Commission (UGC).
