Maoists planning to assassinate PM Narendra Modi?

In a shocking revelation, the Pune Police on Thursday told a court that they have allegedly seized a letter from the residence of one of the five persons, who were arrested on Wednesday for “links” with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), that hinted at plans to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in “another Rajiv Gandhi-type incident”.

The Indian Express mentioned police sources as saying “there is mention in this (seized) communication that Modi has successfully established BJP government in more than 15 states, that if this pace continues, then it would mean immense trouble for the Maoist party on all fronts, and that they were thinking along the lines of another Rajiv Gandhi type incident… that targeting his roadshows could be an effective strategy”.

The five were taken into custody in connection with ‘Elgar Parishad’, held in Pune, on December 31, 2017, a day ahead of Bhima-Koregaon caste riots in the district. Those held and booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act provisions included Sudhir Dhawale in Mumbai, Rona Jacob Wilson in Delhi, and advocate Surendra Gadling, Shoma Sen and Mahesh Raut in Nagpur.

The Pune police have recovered pen drive, hard disk and some other documents from the arrested accused’s house and while addressing a news briefing, Pune Joint Commissioner of Police (CP) Ravindra Kadam said, “We were investigating their links and in this connection, we raided houses of some of them. From Rona Wilson’s house, we recovered pen drive, hard disk and some other documents which were sent to forensics. We also got to know Rona Wilson’s and Surendra Gadling’s connection with Naxals. Later we found their links with the other three people and arrested them accordingly. Surendra Gadling was presented before the court after he was arrested yesterday morning and we were given his police custody for 8 days.”

All five were produced before the sessions court yesterday which sent them in police custody till June 14.

Appearing in the court, prosecutor Ujjwala Pawar said the letter found in Rona Jacob Wilson’s DDA flat at Munirka in Delhi mentioned about the necessity of Rs 8 crore to purchase M-4 rifle and four lakh rounds. It also talked about “another Rajiv Gandhi incident”.
