Meet the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi

28 December, Delhi: Ever since Najeeb Jung quit as Lieutenant Governor on December 22, 2016, speculation is hot over the next LG of Delhi. Various names have been doing the rounds which include some surprising candidates like BS Bassi, Kiran Bedi and Dr. Subramanian Swamy. However, these personalities were never in the race for the much decorated post.

The actual list which was being considered by the Centre included Former Union home secretary Anil Baijal, Former IAS officer Ashok Pradhan and KJ Alphonse. The name finalised by the Union Government from this list is Anil Baijal.

Mr. Anil Baijal, IAS (Retd.), served as the Chief Executive of Bharti Corporation. In a long career spanning over 37 years, Mr. Baijal has held several eminent positions, including that of Union Home Secretary in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Airlines, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation at Government of India.

Anil Baijal is seen close to Ajit Doval, the National Security Adviser to the present NDA government. Anil Baijal was earlier in the executive council of the think-tank Vivekananda International Foundation, several of whose former members have been appointed to senior positions by the Narendra Modi government. It’s also said that Anil Baijal was unceremoniously removed from the post of Home Secretary by the UPA govt.

The official confirmation from Rashtrapati Bhavan will arrive shortly.
