The Narendra Modi-led NDA Government received accolades from a rather unexpected quarter as Jammu and Kashmir alliance partner and chief of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti praised the Centre for controlling corruption in the country.
Mehbooba who was speaking at Agenda Aaj Tak said: “I am not looking forward to be CM of Jammu and Kashmir. I am not comfortable. I generally don’t disagree with my father but this is a point on which I have,” she said.
While Mufti raised a pitch for making the state a hub of economic activity and emphasising upon economic relations with Pakistan in the same fashion as Imran Khan did on Friday, she also praised the nation for being tolerant as its ethic was an amalgamation of several religions.
“Since this Government came to power, the biggest thing they have done is against corruption,” she said as Mehbooba went on to add that she had been told upon inquiry that the middlemen—“ we call them liasoning officers”—operating out of Delhi under the previous regimes including the UPA had packed their bags.
“This is a big accomplishment,” she said. Talking about expanding economic horizons of the state, she said: “J&K should be made a centre of economic activity. We want peace with Pakistan as we need a pass to Afghanistan. But, we do have our own way to Afghanistan: the old Silk Route going via Central Asia. Why don’t we make J&K a gateway to Central Asia. J&K rejected the two nation theory and shook hands with India.”
Mehbooba reposed her faith in the nation and its tolerance which was the result of its culture of unity in diversity.
“Fringe elements will always be there to vitiate the atmosphere. But, the people of this nation are extremely tolerant. All religions have contributed to this nation, most of all Hinduism.
