Minority “Welfare” – An Injustice With Majority

Rita Gupta

During the UP election campaign, PM Narendra Modi mentioned that majority must also get the same privileges as the minorities. The secular jamat of our country comprising of the media, political parties like Congress, SP, BSP and AAP and so called intellectuals started beating chests, calling it a polarizing gimmick. After UP elections, CM Yogi Adityanath declared an increase in the grant for Mansarovar Yatra and the secular jamat again had the same reaction. Recently, I came across certain state-sponsored programmes for minorities in South India which reminded me of the famous statement of Manmohan Singh that minorities have the first right on our country’s resources.

Both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have Andhra Pradesh Christian (Minorities) Finance Corporation (APCMFC) and Telangana State Christian Minorities Finance Corporation (TSCMFC) respectively. When we have a separate Ministry for Minorities both at central and state levels, why this special focus on Christians?

The central government runs several schemes for minority welfare; but the special treatment being given to Christians by states is disturbing. The conversion mafia is already on a rampage in South India. Is this support provided by state governments not helping this mafia?

APCMFC started in 2008 and TSCMFC immediately after the formation of the new state of Telangana. If the aim was only to work for the economic and social “upliftment” of the poor sections of Christians, we could understand. But some objectives listed in the corporations’ websites are shocking.

In 2009, the then YSR government initiated a scheme for a government-sponsored pilgrimage to Jerusalem and other Biblical places. The scheme provided financial assistance of Rs 20,000 per pilgrim to visit Jerusalem, in groups of 50-100. Two trips took place in 2009 and 2010. However, they had to be stopped due to some scuffle with the tour operators. The court had ordered a stay. The stay was lifted in 2013 and the trips have started again. It would be interesting to remind that YSR was a Christian. Imagine the outrage any Hindu CM would generate for making such schemes for his community.

If APCMFC and TSCMFC are financial corporations, they should concentrate on economic development. However, providing financial assistance to Church-run Institutions like schools, hostels, orphanages, hospitals and community Halls, Youth Resource Centres, etc. indicates how deep the conversion mafia has reached. The corporation looks into the construction of churches and their renovations. Besides, this Celebration of Christmas, Anglo Indian Day Celebrations, Promotion of Christian Culture and Youth Awareness Programmes are also the objectives of these corporations. Since when has the celebration of festivals of a particular religion become state responsibility?

There are hundreds of ancient Hindu temples lying in dilapidated conditions in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. All these ancient temples are a part of our history and are heritage sites. The 600-year-old Sri Bhramaramba Malleswara Swamy Devasthanam, the Vaishnava temple in the Gorantla Mandal Headquarters dating back to the 13th century, Sri Swayambu Someshwara Swamy temple built between 11th & 14th centuries in Perur village, Tallapaka in Rajampet Mandal, and the 200-year-old Chaturmukha Brahmalingeshwara Swamy Temple are some of them. These temples are almost in ruins but the state governments are oblivious to their existence. If the maintenance of churches is a state responsibility, whose responsibility is the maintenance of Hindu temples? If not for religion, the government can protect them for tourism and the revenue that it generates; or for preserving the cultural heritage of India.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are in grip of conversion mafia. In 2014, the 76th Bible Mahotsavams was organized in Kaza village on the outskirts of Guntur. The three-day Bible Mission Convention is said to be the largest ‘feeding camp’ which might have converted one million people in one single day. Bill Willis, a part of an initiative to get people converted by having such ‘feeding camps’, wrote in an article:

More than a million people turned from their idols to accept Jesus….. The fields are ripe and ready for the harvest. Please pray for our wisdom and discernment as we attempt to provide more and opportunities to equip and assist missionary pastors that are willing to join the harvest….. It is impossible to know how many have already accepted Jesus as God’s Son, as a result of the feeding events, but it is in the millions. And because of the ongoing ministry of the Missionary Pastors, the number continues to increase each week.

Imagine some Hindu organization like the RSS organizing such an event. The outrage would be seen not only in India but internationally!

Missionaries working full time, state governments making special schemes in the name of “welfare” and Hindus as usual sleeping with their backs turned towards all this. Minority appeasement is causing Hindus a risk of losing their rights and identity. Wake up or face extinction!
