Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) forfeited deposit in all 29 seats after it failed to make a dent in the Karnataka Assembly Election results 2018. Renuka Vishwanathan contesting from Shantinagar was reportedly the only AAP candidate who managed to get more votes than NOTA (None Of The Above).
Prithvi Reddy, AAP’s Karnataka convener, who took on Congress heavyweight KJ George from the sarvagnanagar assembly constituency, could barely manage 1,861 votes coming a distant fourth.
NOTA was 0.9 percent of the total votes polled in the state, according to the Election Commission’s website. This 0.9 % roughly translated into 3,22,841 votes for NOTA.
Of the 29 seats that AAP had contested, 18 were in Bengaluru and 11 were in the other parts of the state. The total number of people who had faith in NOTA is actually more than the total people who had faith in AAP candidates.
Candidates in assembly elections lose deposit, if they secure less than one sixth of the valid votes polled in the constituency.
- AAP did not win a single seat in the 40-member Goa legislature.
- Of the 39 AAP candidates who contested from Goa, 38 have lost their deposits.
- AAP contested from 29 seats in Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017 and almost lost deposit on all the seats.
- AAP had also lost the civic polls in Punjab.
AAP tried to spread itself outside Delhi, but has not been able to achieve much success in this attempt. The defamation case, conflict with LG and the apology drama might have damaged the image of AAP.
With a series of losses in the past few election, is Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP losing the plot completely in the Indian political scenario?
