More than 200 Antique Idols recovered from Businessman Ranvir Shah

On September 28th 2018, the Idol Wing of Tamil Nadu Police Thursday seized 89 statues worth over Rs 100 crore from a businessman’s residence. The businessman Ranvir Shah, who is also the founder of an NGO called Prakriti Foundation, reportedly claimed that he had necessary permissions to keep the idols with him.

IG, Idol Wing, CID, A G Pon Manickavel said idols and stone pillars, more than 100-years-old and stolen from different temples were seized. A total of 89 items, including 22 pillars, 12 metal idols, artefacts and 56 stone sculptures, were seized.

The Idol Wing of Tamilnadu police has now further seized 130 more idols from his farmhouses in Kulangalcheri and Melmaruvathur. They recovered 80 idols in Melmaruvathur and 50 in Kulangalcheri which is a small village near Orgadam.

Speaking about this today, Idol Wing IG Pon Manickavel, said, ‘Many rich people in Tamilnadu have the idols hidden. It will be better if they return them now.’ The raids are continuing and officials are expecting many more idols to be unearthed.
