Reacting to the Amritsar tragedy, MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu has claimed that there were vacant seats at Dhobi ghat and that people were being requested to come inside the ground.
“There were vacant seats at Dhobi Ghat ground. Ravan was tied securely & there were no chances of it falling down & creating chaos. There was no stampede. Announcements were made 4-5 times asking people to come inside Dhobi Ghat ground,” she said.
On Friday night, a moving train ran over a crowd of hundreds who were watching a nearby Ravana Dahan (burning of demon king Ravana’s effigy) program from railway tracks. As per official numbers 59 people have lost lives while a larger number of people have sustained fatal injuries in the accident. Several local people alleged that Congress MLA, Navjot Kaur Sidhu who was the chief guest at the effigy burning program, immediately absconded from the place after the unfortunate accident took place.
Addressing the allegations, Navjot Kaur Sidhu said, “I heard about the deaths only after returning home. I called the Police Commissioner and I asked if I should come back, but he said there was way too much chaos. So I decided that I should at least save the ones who were injured, and take them to the hospital for treatment.”
“The effigy of Ravan was burnt and I had just left the site when the incident happened. Priority is to get the injured treated. Dussehra celebrations are held there every year. People who are doing politics over this incident should be ashamed,” she said in another statement.
Meanwhile Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s husband Navjot Singh Sidhu has said that there has been negligence but the accident was never intentional or motivated. ” It was a sad and an unfortunate incident. It is necessary to understand that it was an accident. There has been negligence but it was never intentional or motivated,” Sidhu said at civil Hospital.
