Recently our country witnessed the ban on the evil practice of Triple talaq. The move was seen as a step forward towards equal rights of women in the Muslim society. But one must remember that this was a very small step forward as Triple Talaq is not the only evil practice against the rights of women. There are still thousands of such practices around the world which not only suppresses the fundamental rights of being an human but suppress the rights of being a living entity. One such barbaric practices which is still prevalent in many parts of the world is Female Genital Mutilation.
The Female Genital Mutilation is a ritual which is observed in many parts of the world. In this ritual some parts or entire external portions of the female genitalia is removed, and the the genitalia is sewn. The extent of removal of flesh and the name of ritual differ across ethnic groups, FGM is the term used for all the related rituals.
The practice is currently prevalent in 27 African countries, Iraqi Kurdistan, Indonesia, and in Yemen. The practice is also prevalent on a smaller scale in Colombia, the Congo, Malaysia, Oman, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as among the Bedouin in Israel; in Rahmah, Jordan.
The ritual is mostly observed by the Muslims but in some African countries the Christians also observe it as well, though generally Christian missionaries have always been against the evil practice. The oppressive practice is majorly practiced in Islamic countries by the fundamentalists.
According to a survey in 2016 conducted by the UNICEF, at-least 200 million women have went through FGM. The ritual takes place in a period in between birth to puberty and the ritual is carried out by elder women’s of the house. In some countries like Indonesia the ritual takes place under the supervision of a professional doctor.
There are different types of the FGM across different ethnicity. The processes are so barbaric and disturbing that we feel it Is not appropriate to write about them in detail here. But we will give you an idea about how barbaric the processes are.
In some types of the FGM the entire external flesh of the genitalia is removed and it is sewn. Leaving only a 2-3 mm passage for urination, which causes prolonged drop by drop urination, pain while urinating and other problems in women. This can also cause serious infections. There are many serious consequences of the ritual which includes recurrent infections, difficulty urinating and passing menstrual flow, chronic pain, the development of cysts, an inability to get pregnant, complications during childbirth, and fatal bleeding.
There are no known health benefits to this barbaric act and it is also said to harm the mental health of a woman. The pain undergone by women during this practice is unimaginable and is often excruciating.
The main reason for the ritual is to restrict the sexuality among women. During some, surveys the common reasons for FGM as said by the women are, the social acceptance, religion, hygiene, preservation of virginity, marriageability and enhancement of male sexual pleasure.
Many women die as a result of this ritual, though exact numbers are unknown as the complications are usually kept secret. The FGM creates various difficulties during the Childbirth. In some places the women are advised to eat less during the pregnancy period to reduce the size of child, so that it does not create much problems during childbirth.
It must be noted that the ritual is not only restricted to the parts of Africa and Middle East, but shockingly it is observed in many parts of India among members of the Islamic community. Though in India it is observed in high secrecy without even letting the neighbors know about it. In coming days we will track down and expose the FGM practices going on in various parts of India.
All the people around the world irrespective of religion, ethnicity, nation and country must come together to crush down such a barbaric practice forever. The FGM completely suppresses the basic rights of an human being.
This is the first part of the series of articles that SatyaVijayi will be covering. In the next article, the FGM practices which are currently happening in certain parts of India will be exposed.
