Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday stoked controversy when she took off a garland from her own neck and put it on a bust of former Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. In India it is generally believed that a respected person or their bust can’t be made to wear garland that has already been worn by someone else. Such an act is regarded as a sign of disrespect.
Hitting out at Priyanka Gandhi for allegedly disrespecting the former Prime Minister, Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani wrote a limerick in a Hindi dialect to take a dig at Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
“In her “arrogance”, she chose a used garland, clapped, waved her hands and left after insulting Shastri,” Ms Irani tweeted.
The BJP leader also took a dig at the Congress over a woman’s accusation that its workers behaved inappropriately with her. “It shows the real values of Congress,” Ms Irani alleged.
People on micro-blogging site twitter also hit out at the Congress leader for her gesture.
How can any son or daughter of India, other than those born in Nehru-Gandhi family, be worthy of independent respect ? @priyankagandhi displaying all the traits of Gandhi family – the disdain they have for everyone else. || Mrs. Vadra using a discarded garland for PM Shastriji. pic.twitter.com/GnrwXKelJk

This is shocking! How can @priyankagandhi offer an used garland to Shashtriji. Wearing a saree once in five years doesn’t make you an Indian. In our culture we NEVER offer used flowers to ANYONE! https://t.co/0yRMDzmITg
