Netizens slam Priyanka Gandhi for putting garland worn by her on the bust former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Wednesday stoked controversy when she took off a garland from her own neck and put it on a bust of former Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri. In India it is generally believed that a respected person or their bust can’t be made to wear garland that has already been worn by someone else. Such an act is regarded as a sign of disrespect.

Hitting out at Priyanka Gandhi for allegedly disrespecting the former Prime Minister, Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani wrote a limerick in a Hindi dialect to take a dig at Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

“In her “arrogance”, she chose a used garland, clapped, waved her hands and left after insulting Shastri,” Ms Irani tweeted.

The BJP leader also took a dig at the Congress over a woman’s accusation that its workers behaved inappropriately with her. “It shows the real values of Congress,” Ms Irani alleged.

People on micro-blogging site twitter also hit out at the Congress leader for her gesture.

Wrapping up her three-day tour of Uttar Pradesh in Prime minister Narendra Modi’s constituency of Varanasi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called the coming Lok Sabha election a “new freedom struggle”.
