With the rise of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal in 2019 elections, it has been suggested that the state is witnessing another ‘Narendra Modi Wave’, this time a bigger one than 2014.
This with the state BJP suggesting that its slogans in West Bengal would be “Jai Shri Ram” and “Jai Maha Kali”, and the party would campaign in the state till the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government was ousted. “Our slogans in Bengal would be ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Maha Kali’. Bengal is the land of Maha Kali. We need goddess Kali’s blessings,” Kailash Vijayvargiya, the BJP’s West Bengal affairs in-charge.
In a Facebook post two weeks back, Banerjee claimed that attempts were being made to propagate the ideology of hatred, which should be opposed. She said her party’s slogan was “Jai Hind, Jai Bangla, and Vande Mataram”.
Mamata Banerjee has accused BJP of mixing religion with politics. The West Bengal CM said, “I have no problem regarding usage of any particular slogan of political parties in their rallies, and for their party purpose. Every political party has its own slogan. My party has Jai Hind, Vande Mataram. The Left has Inquilab Zindabad. Others have different slogans. We respect each other. However, Jai Sia Ram, Jai Ram ji ki, Ram naam satya hai have religious and social connotations. We respect these sentiments. But BJP is using religious slogan Jai Sri Ram as their party slogan in a misconceived manner by mixing religion with politics.”
In the last 1 week, all posts that has been put on the official Social Media accounts of Mamata Banerjee (Facebook/Twitter), Netizens are expressing their vocal opposition by invoking chants of “Jai Sree Ram”.
The above Facebook post for Eid wishes had nearly 40,000 comments and most of them were taunts of Jai Sree Ram, many of them were in Bengali too.

Apart from this, there have been several Tik Tok videos/MEMEs that have been widely circulated on Social Media which has been taunting Mamata Banerjee and her reactions to ‘Jai Sree Ram’ slogans. The BJP had earlier planned to sent 10 Lakh post cards to the West Bengal CM with hand written slogans of ‘Jai Sree Ram’.
