Nirmala Sitharaman’s roadshow blocked in Kerala by Islamic fundamentalists

Union Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was on April 17th blocked during a rally by communally charged Islamic fundamentalists at Poonthura, a Muslim dominated suburb of Thiruvananthapuram.

The defense minister took out a roadshow in the coastal town of Thiruvananthapuram to campaign for the NDA candidate Kummanam Rajasekharan. When her rally entered Poonthura, a group of fanatics blocked her way and started raising anti-BJP slogans. This led to an altercation between the BJP supporters and Muslim fundamentalists.

The rally which was originally planned to cover a distance of atleast 40 kilometres, had to abruptly end due to rising tensions in the locality. Poonthura is considered as Congress stronghold and Congress’ ally Muslim League and other Islamic fundamentalist organisations enjoy strong heft in the region.

Congress’ Shashi Tharoor is contesting from Thiruvananthapuram constituency against BJP’s Kummanam Rajasekharan. Tharoor’s campaign had hit roadblocks when a group of local Congress workers refused to cooperate with him.
