Overturning the Tamil Nadu Government’s decision of handing over all the cases of Idol theft to CBI, Madras High Court appointed Pon Manickavel, who was slated to retire the same day, as a special officer for one year to conduct the probe.
The well reputed police officer was set to retire, before the High Court entrusted him with the responsibility of heading the Idol-wing of Tamil Nadu police. Pon Manickavel and Tamil Nadu government, have not been in best of terms recently.
Earlier in the Court, Manickavel had alleged that the government was trying to fix him in some sort of false case. The Government wanted to hand over all the cases under the Idol-wing to CBI, on the pretext of unsatisfactory performance of the officer.
The CBI, however had denied to take up the cases due to shortage of manpower. The High Court also sought Center’s response to Tamil Nadu government’s demand of having CBI investigate the Idol-wing cases.
Known for his straight-forward and no-nonsense approach, Pon Manickavel is an expert at recovering stolen idols. The recovery of 1000 year old statutes of Raja Raja Chola and his queen, Lokamadevi are regarded as his biggest accomplishment.
