Riots in Asansol city of West Bengal after Hindus took out a procession to celebrate Ram Navami

Riots broke out at Raniganj area in Asansol city of Burdwan district, West during a Ram Navami procession. On Sunday when local Hindu organisations were taking out a peaceful religious procession to celebrate Ram Navami, a mob belonging to Muslim community allegedly attacked them.

As per the allegations made by locals, the mob of Muslim anti-socials not only attacked on those in the procession but also vandalized local shops and houses belonging to the Hindus. People of the minority community dragged Hindus out of their houses to brutally assault them and also allegedly hurled bombs around the area.

Deputy Commissioner of police, Arindam Dutta Chowdhury sustained heavy injuries while attempting to stop the violence and has lost almost half of his one hand. He is currently hospitalized in critical conditions.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Babul Supriyo, who is the MP from Asansol constituency, arrived at Raniganj this morning. “The situation in Ranigunj in my constituency Asansol where dozens of Goons from the Minority community came in matadors & cars, vandalised and burnt down shops, pulled Hindus out from their houses and assaulted/injured them brutally with choppers & swords,” he said in a tweet. “Several individuals are admitted in hospitals around, including 3 gravely injured men admitted in Durgapur Mission Hospital,” he further added.

The locals had complained to Babul Supriyo, when the muslim mob was wrecking havoc on the houses and shops of Hindus, most of state controlled police remained mute spectator. Supriyo assured the locals that he will try to bring central forces around the area in order to ensure safety of Hindus and other innocent people.

Meanwhile state administration has barred entry of any media house inside the area. All the information about the incident collected so far were shared by local residents on social media. The entire Bengali media that is often alleged of being biased and TMC leaning has not covered the story yet.
