Role of RSS and Hindu Mahasabha in India’s Freedom Struggle Explained !!

The followers of the ideology of Hindutwa are often criticized by the Left and congress people, that they didn’t took part in the freedom struggle.

This is an utter lie, because the ideology of Hindutwa inspired thousands of freedom fighters. Here in this article we will look at some of the prominent freedom fighters who were not only inspired but were directly involved with the two main Hindutwa organizations of those times, the RSS and the Hindu Mahasabha.

1-Veer Savarkar.

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, a name which is counted among the bravest freedom fighters India has ever seen. He was a leader of the Hindu Mahasabha. From early ages Savarkar had revolutionary ideas, and much before Congress, it was Veer Savarkar who given the call for Purna Swarajya (complete independence). Savarkar and his associates carried out many guerrilla missions against the British, and finally he was arrested and was sentenced for life imprisonment twice. He spent almost 50 years in jail, where he was tortured badly by the Britishers. When in jail he wrote various books, which include his famous book, Essentials of Hindutwa : Who is a Hindu, the book which worked as the Source of ideology for the Hindu Mahasabha and then RSS. Not only a freedom fighter, Savarkar was a social reformer, he worked hard to remove superstitions like untouchablity among the Hindu people. He opened temples which were open to Hindus of all castes. Savarkar’s legacy will always be remembered.

2- Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar.

Commonly known as Doctorji was an active member of both Congress party and Hindu Mahasabha in early days and was a prominent freedom fighter. After the 1923 riots, and the Muslim appeasing role of Congress party, his dissatisfaction with the Congress grew. As he started focusing on Hindu Mahasabha more. He was highly motivated and inspired by the writings of Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Veer Savarkar. He then went on to form a separate organization for character building and militarization of the Hindu youth known as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Based on the ideology of Veer Savarkar. Doctorji actively took part in the Salt Satyagraha and Quit India movement.

3- Lala Lajpat Rai.

Commonly known as Punjab Kesari, was a prominent supporter of the Hindutwa. He was one of the famous Nationalist Trio within Congress known as the Lal-Bal-Pal. He helped the Hindu Mahasabha to grow in Punjab and was a leader of the Hindu Mahasabha. His association with the Hindu Mahasabha, was not liked by his fellow Congressmen. He sacrificed his life in the freedom struggle, opposing the Simon  commission.

4- Balakrishna Shivarama Munje.

He was a freedom fighter and a leader of Congress, he was a supporter of Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Later he joined Hindu Mahasabha. He established Bhonsala Military School in Nashik to train Indian youth in military training. He was one of the co founders of the RSS, with Dr. Hedgewar.

5- Ashutosh Lahiri and bhai Permanand.

They were companions of Veer Savarkar and both of them were members of the Hindu Mahasabha. They helped Veer Savarkar in many of his revolutionary activities.

6- Ganesh Savarkar.

Also known as Babarao Savarkar was the elder brother of Veer Savarkar. He was a freedom fighter and a leader of the Hindu Mahasabha. He was also a, co founder of the RSS. He was imprisoned in the  Andaman Island by the British administration.
