Hitting out at Congress President Rahul Gandhi, BJP’s National spokesperson, Sambit Patra asked what type of janeu (sacred thread) does he wear and what is his gotra. “If Rahul wears a ‘janeu’, what type of ‘janeu’ does he wear, what is his ‘gotra’?”
Last year during Gujarat election campaigns, when a confusion about Rahul Gandhi’s religion had arised due to him allegedly signing in the register of non-Hindu visitors at Somnath Temple, Congress party came out to proclaim that Rahul is not only a Hindu, but a janeu-dhaari (sacred thread wearing) Hindu.
The political experts believe Patra’s comments to be counter to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s recent jibes at the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Quoting an unnamed RSS source that had published on Caravan magazine in 2012, Shashi recently made a few remarks about the Prime Minister, which did not go down well with a lot of people.
“Modi is like a scorpion sitting on a Shiv Linga. You cannot remove him with your hand and you cannot hit it with a chappal [slipper] either,” he had said.
Meanwhile, continuing his soft-Hindutva strategy in poll bound Madhya Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi travelled today to the Mahakaleshwar temple.
Expect the trading of verbal blows to intensify as the polls draw nearer. Three of the states electing new lawmakers — Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh — are BJP-ruled. Add to that the fact that these state elections precede a general election in 2019, and you realise how high the stakes are for India’s two bickering political heavyweights.
