Sitaram Yechury and CPIM looking to bring Impeachment motion against Chief Justice in Budget Session

If reports are to be believed then Communist Party of India Marxist (CPIM) is planning to bring an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India, Deepak Misra. They are also discussion with other parties about it and are trying to bring it in upcoming Budget Session.

The entire controversy surrounding Chief Justice Deepak Misra began last week when four top sitting judges of the Supreme Court namely, justice J Chelameshwar, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph alleged irregularities in the process of assigning cases in Supreme Court. It is duty of the Chief Justice to assign cases so this was seen as a direct on Chief Justice himself.

Sitaram Yechury expressed concerns over the situation in Supreme Court saying that it seems like the crisis is not over yet. “[It] looks like the crisis is not resolved yet, so [we] need to intervene and it’s time to play the role of the executive,” Yechury told ANI. Though it must be noted that the judges who made allegations later had meetings with the CJI and made it clear that the crisis will be resolved by judiciary itself without any need for outside intervention.

Yechury further hinted about their plans of bringing an impeachment motion against the chief justice with help from other parties, “We are discussing with Opposition parties on the possibility of an impeachment motion against the chief justice in the Budget session.”

Speaking to Times now Yechury said that it is responsibility of the legislator along with executive to correct if there’s anything wrong, “It is the responsibility of the legislature with the executive to correct this institution [the judiciary] if there is anything wrong.”
