A research scholar arrested for calling a senior Bharatiya (BJP) Janata Party leader a fascist in a Tuticorin-Chennai flight was given bail on Tuesday as her father accused the police of harassment.
Louis Sophia shouted “fascist BJP government down, down” at the airport in Tuticorin while she and Tamilisai Soundararajan, BJP’s Tamil Nadu chief, were waiting to collect their luggage after travelling together on a flight.
E Athisayakumar, a lawyer appearing for Sofia, said she had been arrested and sent to judicial custody for 15 days. She was later taken to hospital following complaints of stomach ache.
Sofia, a writer and a mathematician, earlier campaigned against the Sterlite Copper Plant in Tuticorin and the Chennai-Salem eight lane expressway.
