‘Sugarcane leads to diabetes, grow other crops,’ UP CM Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday suggested to farmers in the state that they grow other crops other than sugarcane as excessive production of sugar “leads to diabetes.” Yogi gave this suggestion to the farmers on Tuesday while addressing a gathering in Baghpat.

At a road inauguration programme in Baghpat, where sugarcane is the key crop, Adityanath said: “The market in Delhi is good for you people. I would like to make an appeal to you that if you will cultivate other crops and different types of vegetables, it will be beneficial for the state.”

Uttar Pradesh is the leading sugar producing state of the country. Sugarcane crushing season starts from October 20 and continues till November 5. In 2017-18 season, 38 per cent of the country’s total sugar production of 32 million tonnes took place in the months of October to September.
