Swati Maliwal breaks her fast but why the hypocrisy?

Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal on Sunday ended her nine-day fast after President Ram Nath Kovind approved an ordinance to award death penalty to those convicted of raping girls below 12 years.

‘I was fighting alone but then I was supported by people across the country. I think this is a historical victory in independent India. I congratulate everyone on this victory.’, Swati told the media.

Shilpi Marwaha, a popular name in Delhi Theatre Circuit, gained prominence through her role in the movie Raanjhanaa as Abhay Deol’s sister. In May 2017, Shilpi, who was closely associated with the Asmita Theatre, announced her exit from the group after 11 years. She had quoted that ‘starting her own group’ was one of the reasons which decided that she should quit.

Apart from starting her own group, there was a personal reason for her departure from Asmita Theatre. The personal reason she quit is because she had alleged that the group’s founder and eminent theatre personality, Arvind Gaur, made “advances” towards her.

“I wanted to start my own thing. I thought this was the right time to leave and there were many personal reasons. It was not an assault, I did not let it reach that level. He made advances, and the moment it happened, I said no and left. It started in February 2016 in Varanasi, when we were rehearsing for a play late at night. We were discussing a script when he tried to hold my hand and made advances towards me. I left immediately and thought he would not repeat this. But it happened again after five-six months. He would say, ‘Yeh toh normal cheez hai, ismein galat kya hai?’ After it happened for the first time, I did not go to Asmita for many days,” Shilpi told Times of India.

It is to be noted that Arvind Gaur who denied this allegation by Shilpi was present alongside Swati Maliwal when she broke her fast, which was aimed at awarding death penalty for rapes against minor girls in India.

Although several Media houses seem to have forgotten to point this hypocrisy, Twitterati were quick to backlash on this point against the Chairperson for Delhi Commission for Women.
