Stoking the ages old debate of linguistic equality in India once again, a Tamil Nadu origin man named Abraham Samuel recently on twitter alleged that he was humiliated and mocked at Mumbai Airport for his inability to converse in Hindi.
In a series of tweets tagging, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, MEA Sushma Swaraj, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, DMK President MK Stalin and a number of print and digital media houses, the man alleged that an immigration officer misbehaved with him at Mumbai CST Airport.
“Was just denied immigration by an immigration officer in counter 33 at Mumbai CST AIRPORT, for knowing only Tamil and English and NOT hindi! What a disaster! Reported the officer, hope they take action. @SushmaSwaraj @mkstalin @narendramodi,” he wrote.
Samuel said that after looking up to his Indian passport, the immigration presumed that he must be knowing Hindi. However when Samuel told him that he only knows his mother tongue that is Tamil and English, the immigration officer started misbehaving. “The immigration officer at counter 33 in the Mumbai International Airport, clearly profiled me, saw my Indian passport and assumed that i should know Hindi and even after politely informing him that I do not know Hindi, continued his impolite behavior,” he said.
” Even after complaining to the immigration officials at the airport, he continued his disgraceful speech even in front of his superiors! Officials should investigate CCTV footage and can ask me any details that would be helpful. @MEAIndia @SushmaSwaraj @INCIndia @RahulGandhi,” Samuel further added.
Meanwhile, a senior immigration official later told that Samuel had cleared the immigration in just four minutes. The erring officer has also been taken off duty temporarily, the senior official said.
“We regret that such an incident took place at Mumbai airport. The said officer who has been taken off the counter, pending investigation, will be given soft skill training and his counselling will be done,” another official said.
