Tamil Nadu CM E Palainasamy rejects Kerala govt’s claim that water released from Mullaperiyar caused flooding

The floods in Kerala can’t be blamed on the release of water from the Mullaperiyar dam, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister EK Palainasamy said today. He said they were caused by an excess discharge of water occasioned by heavy rain — from dams in Kerala.

Kerala told Supreme Court on Thursday that sudden release of excess waters from Mullaperiyar dam by Tamil Nadu was one of the reasons why the floods happened.

The Supreme Court ordered on Friday that the water level in the Mullaperiyar dam be maintained at 139 feet until August 31 due to the devastation caused by unprecedented floods in Kerala.
