A former soldier and BJP worker was mercilessly assaulted by alleged Trinamool Congress (TMC) supported goons on Sunday in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. Ananta Maiti, retired from the army and a member of BJP, was attacked with bamboo sticks, iron rods and other fatal weapons.
The shocking incident took place in Alamchak Belda village of Potashpur police station. According to Maiti, he was returning from the house of his brother when some miscreants belonging to the TMC blocked his road. At first he protested their actions and tried to make his way through them. But instead of giving him way, the miscreants began attacking him.
The family of the victim have alleged that police was present in close vicinity to the spot where the attack occurred but refrained from interfering. They said that the attack came because Maiti works for the BJP in locality.
After the attack, Maiti who sustained serious injuries was rushed to a local medical facility.
Speaking exclusively to Satyavijayi, BJP National secretary and former president of the West Bengal unit, Rahul Sinha said, “TMC has never respected soldiers. Even when tensions were high in borders, they kept making various statements against the army. Hence I believe, the dignity of soldiers is never a matter of concern for them.”
“TMC has realised that their time is over and so they have resorted to violence and intimidation. CPIM did the same in their last phases but couldn’t hold on to power as people of Bengal never encourage violence.”
Due to the incident, tensions between the BJP and TMC have soared in the area. The attack on Ananta Maiti is the second incident of attack on a former soldier by political goons in less less than a week. On Friday, Madan Sharma, a retired Navy officer in Mumbai was assaulted by Shiv Sena workers for sharing a cartoon on their party supremo and Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray.
Meanwhile in yet another incident, a BJP worker named Ganesh Roy from Goghat in Hoogly district was found hanging from a tree. The BJP have alleged TMC hand in this death as well.
