The Supreme Court had ordered a floor test in the Karnataka Assembly at 4 PM Saturday, drastically slashing the 15-day window given by Governor Vajubhai Vala to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister Yeddyurappa to prove his majority. However Yeddyurappa, who was unable to prove his party’s majority, in an emotional bid resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
He went ahead to suggest that he will win all seats in Karnataka in the 2019 Lok Sabha Election as a gift it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah.
D K Shivkumar, the man who has been hailed in the inner circles of Congress as a Hero, played a crucial role in protecting both the Congress and JD(S) MLAs. From Bengaluru to Kerala and finally Hyderabad, Shivkumar had carefully weighed every choice that was available to him, to ensure that all MLAs were securely moved around before they were available for the floor test.
DK Shivkumar is also once known for his MLA manoeuvring techniques, especially the one he displayed when Gujarat MLAs had to be protected from poaching ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in which Ahmed Patel was contesting.
HD Revanna of JD(S), four-time MLA, is the elder son of H D Deve Gowda and elder brother of HD Kumaraswamy. He was seen playing a crucial role on the ground, extensively campaigning in Mandya, Kodagu and Chikmagaluru.
After BJP’s CM B S Yeddyurappa resignation, the equation between Congress and JD(S) has now come into play. There will be several power struggles seen between both the parties before a final proposal would be agreed upon to form the Government in Karnataka.
A video of D K Shivkumar and HD Revanna has been seen circulating in WhatsApp, Twitter and Facebook. In this video both the leaders are seen fighting against each other. One such WhatsApp message reads, “Within minutes after the resignation of Yedyurappa, bickering started between JDS and congress about ministry formation. JD(S)’ HD Revanna had a heated exchange with D.K.Shivakumar inside Vidhan Sabha as JD(S) refused to accept D.K. Shivakumar name for Dy.CM post. But they enacted another drama in front of journalists outside. The video has become viral in social media”
Unfortunately this video is not from 20th May 2018 after the Karnataka floor test concluded, as suggested by several WhatsApp messages and twitter users. This video dates back to 11th June 2016, when there was acrimonious war of words between Energy minister D K Shivakumar and JD(S) MLA H D Revanna during the Rajya Sabha Elections. But from this video, one can realise the bonhomie of both parties.
At ground level, JD(S) party workers too, especially in Mandya and Old Mysuru region are also not happy with this opportunistic alliance. One can only wonder what will be the expiration of this alliance and if at all the Congress-JD(S) alliance will be able to complete their full term.
