It is a third major occuring in Assam this month where locals took law into their hands and thrashed innocent people.
“The police were briefed by some villagers during morning hours. Our team immediately rushed to the spot and the villagers handed over them to us. They were found badly injured and were admitted to a hospital first,” Nagaon district Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ripul Das told PTI.
He said the police will register a case after initial explorative investigation.
A police officer from the local outpost said the incident happened when villagers saw the man from the neighbouring Tubuki village visiting the woman’s home at Jhumurmur village yesterday night.
“Villagers in large numbers came out and alleged that they were in an illicit relationship. The man tried to escape but in vain, was caught by the villagers. Then both of them were tortured by the villagers,” the police officer said.
“The woman’s head was shaved by other women of the village. Their clothes were torn and they were tortured throughout the night. The villagers informed us only during early hours in the morning,” he added.
