According to a TOI report, smartphone manufacturer VIVO could be cutting ties with the BCCI just weeks before the thirteenth edition of the IPL. According to the report, with the negativity which has enveloped the market regarding the company, VIVO may be willing to exit from IPL.
Over past 48 hours, VIVO has found itself on the receiving end of a major backlash by Indians on social media. The public mood in India is highly against China and its companies at the moment.
The report claims that one IPL franchise called seven other franchises to inform about the latest development, which led to the news getting leaked. BCCI is reportedly unhappy with the franchise for leaking it before any official confirmation.
Well-placed sources confirmed to TOI on Tuesday morning that “Vivo is going to have to exit the league this year and that looks certain now. How that happens is going to depend on how BCCI and Vivo negotiate the matter. The company (Vivo) has had its own share of issues and the BCCI has optics to deal with, given the political climate. They have to come to some understanding here because legal options can’t be considered in this case”.
The contractual obligation between VIVO and BCCI is said to be an “Iron clad.” And unless the former agrees to walk out, it may be impossible to break the deal. However as per the report, VIVO may be willing to walk out themselves.
However at the moment, the biggest headache for BCCI will be to find a replacement, if their deal with VIVO falls apart. As per sources, it would be difficult to find a good deal in a Covid torn market.
