Loksabha on thursday passed a bill making Islamic practice of instant triple talaq (divorce) a criminal offense, amid intense resistance and walkouts. The Congress party that recently registered victories in assembly elections of three states and looking to put on a challenge to the BJP led NDA in 2019 general elections, walked out of the house to register their protest.
Along with Congress, AIADMK also walked out of the house while K Chandrasekhar Rao led TRS remained inside to oppose it. However at the forefront of all the resistance to Triple Talaq bill was the face of India’s Muslim politics, Asaduddin Owaisi.
Arguing in favour of triple talaq, Owaisi equated the practice with homosexuality. He said that when homosexuality has been decriminalised then why is triple talaq being criminalised. “If sexual minorities have been given a choice in Section 377, then why are religious minorities not getting any choice?” he asked.
“A man can stay with another man, a woman can stay with another woman, they are free to do whatever they want to with each other, and you have problems with Triple talaq,” he asked.
Calling the move to criminalise the practice an attack on the constitution granted right of freedom of faith and belief, Owaisi suggested that the law is being brought to target the Muslims.
The bill which has been revised, was passed amid roaring echos of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” from the government side. Union Law minister termed the move a step towards insaniyat (humanity) and insaaf (justice).
