West Bengal BJP Youth President allegedly tortured in police custody

As per the reports, on Wednesday night West Bengal President of BJP’s youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Debjit Sarkar was allegedly tortured in police custody at Islampur PS of North Dinajpur District, West Bengal.

Sarkar was taken into custody on Wednesday from Islampur after BJP called for a 12 hour state-wide bandh, over the death of two students at a local government school in alleged police firings. He is expected to remain in custody for a few days to come.

Since Thursday morning, rumors were rife on social media about Sarkar being tortured inside the custody, however by evening several images showing bruises on the body of the BJP leader surfaced on Internet. This resulted in widespread outrage from the BJP supporters.

#IsDebjitDa safe, kept trending throughout Thursday on Twitter. Debjit Sarkar has not only himself confirmed the reports of torture but has also alleged that he was not served any meal inside custody on Wednesday night. A letter has also been sent to the Minister of Home affairs Kiren Rijiju by BJYM National Vice-President Madhukeshwar Desai, seeking intervention into the situation.

Meanwhile Senior West Bengal BJP leader, Chandra Kumar Bose who is a descendant of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, lambasted BJP State President Dilip Ghosh for not taking enough measures to ensure the safety of party leaders and cadres.

A week or so ago, two students of Islampur’s Darivita school died in open firing while protesting against the appointment of Urdu teacher, in absence of regular teachers for important subjects such as Bengali and Geography. The students who were present at the protests and locals have accused the police for firing. However the police has claimed that several unknown assistants are responsible for the firings.
