Wife of a BJP activist was gang-raped by four unidentified men an under construction building near her residence at Khardah area of North 24 Parganas district. The incident took place on Wednesday night and the woman is under treatment at Panihati State General Hospital, police said.
Amar Banerjee, the husband of the victim has lodged a complaint. He said that his wife was returning from coaching centre with son, when two men attacked and dragged her away to an under construction area, where two other men were already waiting. Banerjee further in his police complaint claimed that since he belongs to a political party, he has been receiving threats from miscreants.
The victim in her testimony told the police that she was accosted by four youths with their faces covered when she was returning home after leaving her son at his private tutor’s home nearby. They forcibly took her to a nearby under-construction building and took turns to rape her.
While the culprits are yet to be identified, BJP sources have held cadres of ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) responsible for the crime. “This is alarming. Such vindictive tendencies before the election affect peace and order. Political antagonism impacts personal, familial and social life. The government should be alert,” said BJP leader Sankar Chatterjee.
“We received a complaint that a 40-year-old woman was gang-raped by four men. We have recovered important evidence from the spot. However, we are yet to receive medical confirmation of the rape and the interrogation is underway,” said a police official of Barrackpore Commissionerate.
A BJP delegation, led by party leader Subhas Sarkar and including Mahila Morcha leaders visited Khardah and met the family members.
They also demanded that the culprits be immediately arrested.
