Wife of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew was reportedly caught at airport with 2 kg of gold

Bizzare scenes were witnessed in Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport on Saturday when police jumped in to protect an “influencial woman” who was stopped by custom officers for reportedly carrying 2 kg of gold. The influencial woman in question here, was allegedly none other than the wife of Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee.

According to various news reports, the mysterious woman alleged to be Abhishek Banerjee’s wife, landed in Kolkata on Saturday from a Thai Airways flight. She went through normal screening and was questioned about the 2kg of gold that she was carrying. In face of interrogation, she called her husband. Very soon, sources say, several police personnel reached the Kolkata airport.

Later, the matter was amicably sorted. It is not known if any case was registered against the lady or if the gold was seized by customs.

Various top BJP leaders in West Bengal also suggested that the woman was none other than the wife of TMC’s de-facto number two. “Can @abhishekaitc issue a statement on news of her wife caught with 2 kg of gold? Serious charges of smuggling,” asked West Bengal BJP Mahila Morcha head Locket Chatterjee on twitter.

Meanwhile, MP from Asansol and Union Minister Babul Supriyo also made a suggestive post about the entire incident saying “No prize for guessing who the Lady of the Young Powerful Politician Is.”

“Woman caught with a Thai Passport carrying more than 2 KILOs of Gold – when everyone knows she is voter of South KOL • No prize for guessing who the Lady of the Young Powerful Politician IS !! We shall ensure a thorough enquiry is done on this,” Supriyo said.
